Hi, I am reproducing (in part) what Skipper once told me hoping it will motivate us all.
"Self Help and innovation is a state of mind and needs to be cultivated and essentially means that you will NEVER buy anything before you explore the possibility of MAKING/BUILDING/DOING It Yourself. It helps nurture self confidence, reduces dependence, increases patience, asserts individuality, develops innate skills, encourages logical/practical thinking, forces simplification of the seemingly complex and also saves tons of money. It is easy, gratifying, relaxing, therapeutic and better than yoga or meditation. If you are thinking of gardening, think of making a unique pot or making compost. Buying a lampshade? Make one instead. Replacing a mixer, repair it. Everything on DiY club is aimed at developing these mental and physical skills. Forcing you to think out of the box, letting your imagination go wild and then realising it. There are a lot of people waiting to help and seek help. Nothing is impossible, till you think so". - Skipper
Hi Gobble. My vote is with you. Even though I am not as committed or as experienced as the others here, I feel odd doing something, anything different, for fear of ridicule. So I understand when you say DiY is an 'attitude'.
Most of the people who will be active here will be disgruntled souls feeling like misfits in a stereotypical society. This has to and will change.
The main purpose of us getting together is to right this imbalance. Historically, in India, there has always been a a gap between the 'knowers' and the 'doers'. This has doen us all great harm. Theory did not improve as these people, the so called 'elite' shunned physical work and hence did not make corrections. People who knew the practical problems were illiterate and never had a voice, neither did they have the resources to update and improve.
Our purpose, apart from the hobby aspect should also be to see that our white collars assume a tint of blue. This, apart from the obvious benefits will also build mutual respect. Maybe then, we will appreciate the fruits of 'LABOUR'.
